As a newish subscriber, the improvement to my spiritual happiness on reading your pieces is so great, that I am rationing myself to one (...or just maybe two) articles per session. Its somewhat of a drug-like relationship, as I uncomfortably see the more recent articles and the immanent need for patience hoving into view.

I think universal suffrage is a tragedy that has doomed the country. It is no coincidence that such a long drawn out decline seems to stem back to the 1920s.

Why should those who do not contribute be allowed to vote on how other peoples money is to be spent? The 40 shilling freeholder was a (somewhat flawed) test to make sure that only those who have a stake in society can vote. But when a vote is essentially a decision on how taxes should be used, why on earth are people who take more than they pay allowed to have a say? Universal suffrage inevitably leads to larger government because the median voter is always a net beneficiary of the government. It will always be so.

It might well be a good idea to incorporate a contributory component into some British social services. This seems to work for most EU countries, but introducing it in the UK would probably be almost impossible for the foreseeable future. I’m not sure we should be trying to solve this problem by limiting the number/type of voters. The concentration of power, away from the average voter, and into the hands of an elite few, is essentially what I am complaining about in the article! But I take your point about the average voter being a net recipient, recent figures confirm this to be true. Many thanks for your comment.

Thank you for the reply. Just to clarify I’m not complaining about people being stupid- quite the opposite! People vote in their own interest and the incentives are set up for a continuously expanding state.

I absolutely agree with you there Benedict.

Geez, low status with every article of yours I read the parallels between our countries are the same. The non government organizations have infiltrated every aspect of our political process in the US as well. They are like the pod people from Invasion of the Bodysnatchers. They rather act like them as well, soul less beings who cannot answer a question and can only point their finger and scream at those they recognize as dissenters.

They are the globalists taking over the world. I mean have you noticed Trudeau and his cabinet or my president? They are everywhere!
