Concerning President Trump, it is worth remembering that he is the first President since Eisenhower to not have started a war and the first since 1948 to persuade the Middle Eastern and some African Muslims and Israelis to to the negotiating table, a feat had any other President done it would have been worth numerous Nobel Peace Prizes.
He also persuaded the insane North Koreans to stop firing rockets over Japan.
He made the USA self-sufficient in petroleum products and increased minority emploment to unprecedented levels.
Darkly comic as ever. Although I don't believe the Ukraine-Russia conflict is anything to do with reclaiming territory - it is simply the current iteration of Oceania (US /NATO) permanently at war with Eastasia /Eurasia in order to keep the arms industry in business; launder vast sums of money; and distract the cattle class (and kill a few of us off) with the threat of nuclear escalation. Putin and Zelensky are on the same side. And it's not ours.
Thank you Bettina. I’m definitely more conflicted over this war than you, and many others. But I do agree that there are an awful lot of people, making an awful lot of money out of other people’s suffering. Of course we’re being encouraged not to talk, or even think about that.
Some of your new subscriptions may well have come via a link to your Brexit article a commenter on UnHerd posted - I know cause I’m one of them...and thanks- I’ve enjoyed reading your stuff
Thank you Joyce, for taking the time to read and comment. There are lot of us political homeless at the moment, I hope that some of our so called leaders take note at some point, and react accordingly. Gaps in the market tend to get filled.
Since you mentioned it. . . I have some thoughts on Trump. You see I never hated him and he did not scare me.
According to democrats that makes me Maga.
According to my president that makes me a (neo) fascist.
According to the liberal msm that makes me a racist and a white supremicist.
In addition I am uneducated. Oh, and I am deplorable. Apparently it also makes me a member of those terroristic Christian’s and perhaps worse a parent who does not want teachers hiding stuff about my children from me. What a bigot am I?
Trump won because he said he wanted to drain the swamp of corruption in Washington.
He called out the media. Fake news!
He called out the crimes of Hillary.
He called out her elitist co conspiracists on their tax evasion and insider stock trading.
He called out the mistake of the Iraq war.
(But we must have war to keep economy going)
He called out the crooked intelligence agencies.
I don’t recall but he must have disparaged academia.
He pissed a lot of people off in the machine.
But many, half the country, said hell yes to all those things. Some one is finally remembering we the people.
All those groups did not take kindly and proceeded to conspire in any way they could to demonize him and the people who voted for him. I have never witnessed so much hate in the US. The groups were possessed with TDS.
It became heresy to say a kind word of praise about any damn thing he did. They spread their syndrome across the world.
It was exhausting, it has done more damage to our country than we can measure. They can not let it go. Like covid measures they batted over our heads ad Nauseam for years, they refuse to admit they were wrong.
It was hysterics, mass psychosis and embarrassing to the rest of us.
I may have ptsd from it.
And I am not even republican.
Ok I am done. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest!
I don’t have an issue with any valid criticisms of politicians, low status. Certainly your comment was innocuous.
I do have issues with manipulators and bullies spewing false narratives, who use their powers to censor and control public access to information. At this point they want to control much more than that.
I also dislike groupthink. I am rather stubborn that way.
I don’t personally know any true maga supportors who are accused of blindly supporting trump, so I can’t speak about their motives. Blindly following ideologies works both ways.
I just wanted to respond to one comment you made. As a woman I might be more repelled by Trump. I wonder why you may have added that remark?
Personally, I have found both Clinton and Biden more repulsive to women.
Yes. None of them seem particularly female friendly now you mention it.
I can’t really speak to Biden. He just seems weird and creepy to me. But Clinton is in a whole other league. It seems extraordinary that he managed get away with so much. Especially when the media wasn’t quite as compliant as it is today. And the cover ups and smears were extraordinary.
I find both the Clintons pretty unbearable to be honest.
Eloquently put Deidre. You should start a Substack. I agree wholeheartedly.
The thing with Trump is that for the most part a balanced view is not allowed. David Walker (thanks David!), above, lists a genuinely impressive set of achievements, but for the reasons you mention, and others, they are simply ignored. Having said that, Trump is clearly an incredibly flawed human being. And it’s pretty obvious to me why he repels so many people, especially women.
On the other hand of course many of his supporters seem to think he can do no wrong, which is equally baffling to me.
TBH Trump is so polarising I usually steer clear of writing about him. Most people’s views are so entrenched it’s pointless trying for nuance or humour.
I thought the anecdote I used in the article reflected that complexity a little bit so I decided to use it in the end. I hope it worked on some level.
It’s clear if it’s Biden vs Trump again in 2024 the only loser will be 330m Americans. (I don’t think it will be. They are beginning to manoeuvre Biden out it seems. And I think Trump’s latest charges might stick. But who knows?)
Thanks so much for this comment Deidre. Lots to think about.
That’s very good of you to say Matthew! I really appreciate it.
That sense of anger is very palpable at the moment. I’m not usually big on Unions-nice idea. Often pretty awful in practice. But of course Mick Lynch etc want more wages for their members. You made the wages they’re currently getting worth loads less-If people were paid properly they wouldn’t need subsidies and tax credits.

100% David. Trump Derangement Syndrome is real.

Well that would certainly help explain it. Thanks for letting me know Jeff, and I’m delighted you’re enjoying the Substack.
Thank you for these articles, Dominic. Makes me feel a good deal less politically lonely. Still politically homeless, though.

The Challenger disaster was one of many American Hindenberg disasters.
