Lawrence wore the garb that was most suitable for the climate, and which helped him blend in. There is also the suggestion that it was given to him in gratitude for his assistance, and as a mark of honour.
Perhaps we should also have trigger warnings if any Africans or Asians are depicted wearing suits? The answer is no, because of course the white oppressors have forced them to wear such clothing.
There were plenty of other naughty Englishmen dressing up in foreign like Richard Burton who snuck into Mecca dressed up like a Hajji. I wonder if they have a painting of that?
Regarding Diworseity, I think Rupert Lowe put it best
"If ‘diversity’ was actually our strength, they wouldn’t have to keep telling us it is"
Ha I love the Drinker. I’ve actually read all of his books as well. Which he wrote under his real name Will Jordan. The Ryan Drake series is highly recommended if you’ve never dabbled. A huge talent. And his work rate?? Off the charts !
Yep, I've read some of his novels as well. Apparently, it's quite difficult to play the persona of someone drunk. Most fail because they try to play someone drunk. According to one insider I watched in the interview, the trick to playing someone drunk is to pretend you're a drunk pretending to be sober.
I'm deeply envious of creatives who can simply churn it out. Michael Crichton is the worst. Apparently, when he was still at college studying law, he would have an idea for the plot of a novel in an airport, and then write the whole thing within a month.
Sickening!
I will be lucky if I hit the pace of Hilary Mantel.
My main sin is sloth. I can easily spend hours researching- I was far worse before AI- and I write a fair number of TLDR Notes- but when it comes to actually tapping out essays, I'm Procratsination's Bitch.
There’s a worrying trend which I have noticed among some young people who have been taught for years that Britain and the western countries are all bad guys, and we’re killing the planet and everything we have is stolen. The schools are telling kids that because they are white they are racist and that coloured people cannot be racist.
I’ve heard young people openly saying that they are racist, they don’t care anymore, the word has been overused massively and it’s now meaningless.
The first country Nelson Mandela visited was Britain, why?
The word 'racist' has been meaningless for some time now, but that does not erase its potency to cause harm. It is not an adjective but an action, a magic spell-word used to dehumanise and insult just like any other racial epithet.
All roads to the destruction of the west lead back to China and it's various power bases/psyops in the west such as the UN, UNWRA, WHO, WEF, COP30 - next big HQ will be London. And the EU is totally in China's pocket.
Great Uncle T.E. He had some great adventures. We should be proud…
… and we should get ourselves a hat like his. It’s pretty cool. Maybe we can organise a day trip to the National Portrait Gallery and take some falafel and hummus for lunch. Would be a nice day out.
When I lived in Dubai I was informed that the different coloured and patterned scarves denoted different clans and tribes and it was definitely not done to wear one of a clan other than your own, a bit like our Scottish tartans. Surely then all those kids wearing the same black and white ones can't all be in the same clan, can they?
I once met an old fellow in East Riding, who met Lawrence of Arabia in Bridlington when he was a young boy. Old lozza was apparently given a cushy R&R job there for a wee while, going out in a patrol boat and picking up downed pilots out of the drink. He said all the children knew him, and we're quite fond of this unassuming master of guerilla strategy.
That guy was a legend in his own way. He was one of the last remaining wheel rights in the country, but in his 80s when I met him. Fit as a fiddle.
That was fun. Although writing it must have absolutely done your head in, trying to keep track of the loops of contradiction.
Crazy idea - how about we have some pride in our own culture, and encourage others to adopt it when it suits them (which they often do anyway, like wearing a suit), and when we don features of other cultures we view it as fun and flattery that it clearly is. Elvis's record company and Justin Trudeau's minstral cosplay can be seen as the exception, not the rule.
"They are simply the niche prejudices, mad obsessions, and unwavering shibboleths of an ideologically driven, pathologically censorious, imperious, and high-handed, cadre of bullies, busy bodies, and petty tyrants."
Great piece sir. In my Younger days, I spent quite a bit of time in the deserts of Egypt, in the Sinai in the Sahara and also a bit of time in Morocco. The locals dress how they dress for very good and sensible practical reasons. Yes, there’s the sun, but at night it can actually get quite cold. So there is also the possibility that dear Laurence dressed as he dressed because that is how you survive in such a treacherous environment. For the same reason, one wears lots of tweed and Wool when in the cold in Scotland.
Excellent article. Cheered me up no end on this thoroughly dank, wet, miserable January morning.
Thanks Tony!

Yes Francis. I’m pretty sure they have that famous painting of Burton. We could do with an epic movie about him too…
Great essay. You really hit your stride when you channel your inner Critical Drinker.
Don't stop. Don't ever stop.

Ha ha. Yes. Absolutely phenomenal pace. I struggle to write a piece every other week!

Ha ha. I work hard. Never seem to get anywhere.
Brilliant, thanks.

Because he wanted to meet the Queen - like every other world leader!
I miss Nelson Mandela! Always jolly. Like an African Santa.
Still, things have seemed to have gone to pot with the world since they let him out. Coincidence? 🤔
You might not have felt that way in his terrorist days when he was blowing people up.
That's the contrarian in you!

I love the National Portrait Gallery. Only bested by the National Gallery, which as you know, is literally next door.
I meant to add a bit about it still being a ‘must visit’. But I had to cut it to fit in more bilious cynicism.
I love the National Gallery. I go nearly every time I come to London. I’ll be there in a couple of weeks to see some Roman pots.
I go less frequently than I should. But the joy of living nearby is that you can pop in for a quick ½ hour culture hit.

Another truly excellent (and, equally, depressing) read. Thanks for making me laugh/cry yet again.
And thank you for reading and restacking Nessa. That really helps! 👍
“ Or Sir Keir Starmer beating off some Ukrainian arsonists.”
What you did there. It was seen.
No idea York. You must be seeing things 🤔
Lovely! Western culture bad....all other cultures good!
And the line in there....tucked away about the brave S'kier 'protecting himself' from those malevolent Ukrainians is a gem!
Thanks David!!

Amazing. I’d watch a movie of some of your exploits Scott.

That is the best summation I have ever seen.
Thanks so much Patrick. Very kind of you to say. 👍

It only matters if you care. So stop caring about the meaningless and inane bleetings of sheeple and other malignant narcissists.
And don't forget to tell them so, whenever you encounter them.

Brilliant, as usual. Thanks. Couldn't get the coffee button to work. I owe you a few now.
Thanks Hyper. Don’t know what’s happening with the button. It’s worked for some people-maybe there’s a bug in the system. Thanks anyway. 👍
Sorted and settled!
Thanks Hyper. Many thanks!
